While most of the world is moving towards 1080p, I've been impressed recently by displays with even higher resolution. A few weeks ago, I stopped by CanonExpo 2010 in New York, where Canon showed off 4K and 8K displays, and also talked about new sensors capable of capturing up to 120 megapixels.


Canon showed off new high-resolution LCD displays ranging from more traditional 2K displays (1920 by 1080) to a 4K (4096 by 2160) 30-inch display it introduced in March, all the way up to an 8K (8192 by 4320) model that is yet to go into production. They all looked very good, but with high-resolution photographs, in particular, I could notice the difference. These were more technology demo than real products, but the company says such displays might be used by professional photographers, and also in some very high-end applications, such as high-definition medical imaging.
